We offer lessons for adults and juniors – from beginners upwards. These can be provided on a one-to-one basis or in groups. Coaching usually covers stroke making and technique, but we are also introducing lessons on tactical issues and match play. So whatever your needs there will be something to suit you.
Our Equality and Diversity policy ensures that everyone is treated fairly and with respect.
Our Coach – Kent Tennis Coach of the Year 2014
Jacob Johnson, Head Coach, RAW Tennis
Jacob has a wealth of experience, having started coaching in 1991 whilst still at school. He has a passion to teach and wonderful enthusiasm for the game. Jacob has successfully ensured RAW Tennis has fast become one of Kent’s foremost tennis coaching choices – offering group and private coaching programmes for juniors from as young as four years old to adults, incorporating both novice and intermediate players.
Jacob previously coached at the Parklangley club and Sundridge Park LTC before taking a permanent residency at Old Wilsonians in 2013 where he officially launched RAW Tennis. Much of his coaching today focuses on development work with youngsters, bringing them through to team and county level especially with juniors in the Mini Red, Mini Orange and Mini Green categories.
Jacob runs school initiatives where he provides free coaching for children during Spring and Summer terms and optional after-school programmes at Hayes, Pickhurst and Wickham Common in addition to Raglan where he also holds a position all year round for both curriculum and the after-school club.
RAW Tennis programs for adults and children run during term-time and the super popular junior multi-sports camps are held when schools are out. Membership of the Old Wilsonians is compulsory for youngsters wishing to take part in the coaching programme. Coaching sessions cost from just £6 for 45 minutes and £7.50 for 60 minutes.
Coaching for Youngsters
Most of our youngest members start to learn the game of tennis through group coaching sessions – usually in groups of 8-10. These sessions typically take place after school in term-time, with our coaching programme running from around 3.30pm each weekday until 7pm most days. There are also sessions on Saturday morning up to 1pm. Coaching sessions are offered for Mini Red, Mini Orange, Mini Green and yellow ball tennis. Mini Tennis is a fun way for anyone aged between four and 11 years to get a feel for the game. Mini Tennis has been designed to allow young players to develop at a speed that suits them.
There are three distinct colour-coded stages following the same sequence as traffic lights – red for 4 to 8 year olds, orange and green for 9 & 10 year olds after which players progress to playing with the normal adult yellow ball. Starting with red, kids play on small courts with mini racquets and sponge balls. As players progress, the court size and racket length increase making the game faster and faster.
Our Head Coach also delivers tennis lessons during curriculum time in local schools and in some after-school clubs ensuring continuity for those children who continue coaching sessions at Old Wilsonians’ after first enjoying them at school.
Most of our junior members are part of the coaching programme. All members have equal rights to book courts – regardless of age – so children can book courts on equal terms, enabling them to put into practice what they learned from their coaching.. Generally the coaching programme takes priority over most other activity except for league matches.
All the coaches are qualified and licensed, DBS-checked and have relevant First Aid Training.
Coaching for Adults
We have a wide range of coaching opportunities for adults and offer daytime and evening lessons across all abilities from beginners to advanced. The group sizes are 4 on one court or 8 on two courts. Our coaches usually prefer to have a hit with you before allocating to any current sessions so they can recommend the best group for you.
Adults can join the coaching programme as non-members although club membership is encouraged – players can then benefit from the other benefits of being within a wider multi-sports club. Individual coaching is £30 per hour and for more than two people from £35. All of the coaches are licensed, qualified, DBS checked and have relevant First Aid Training.
