Old Wilsonians vs Beckenham U18's - Match Report
Posted 12th May 2018
OWLTC Team members Tomas Broomfield & Oliver Harris
The match on Sunday 6 May was a very tight affair. First we played the doubles. Tom and Ollie stormed into a convincing 5-0 lead in the first set, before being pegged back slightly to eventually win it by 6-3. The second set was the reverse with Beckenham taking it 6-3. The decider was a cliff hanger though, with the scores neck and neck up to 4-4. Tom held his next service game and at 5-4 up we had at least 4 match points but eventually they tied it up a 5-5. Ollie then held his serve and after another half dozen match points, our boys finally clinched it with a 7-5 victory.
The 2 singles matches were also very tight matches. Tom lost his first set in quick time, whilst Ollie played the gane of the day, lasting around 20 minutes with umpteen deuces. That took it to 3-3 before the Beckenham lad, who incidentally was 2 years older than our boys, proved a little too strong for him in the end.
The match was tied up - 1 rubber each.
Meanwhile Tom had reversed the second set and it was all down to the decider. This one was neck and neck all the way to the end. At 5-5 Tom got very close to breaking his opponent’s serve on more than one occasion. However, his opponent managed to hold on.
Tom's next service game started well, going 30 – 0 up. His opponent pegged him back and Tom served to save match point. After a nerve wracking exchange of shots, Tom pushed his opponent back to the baseline, leaving him stretching to get a raquet on the ball. He did manage to get something on it and somehow it reached and hit the net but the cruellest piece luck saw it trickle over on onto Tom's side. Game, set and match to Beckenham.
So, after a valiant attempt our boys felt somewhat disappointed at the manner of their defeat but put up a fantastic fight none the less. Well done boys
