Latest Honorary Old Wilsonians
Posted 19th December 2017
We welcome 3 new Old Wilsonians Jan Jenkins , Norman Holmes & Archie Whitaker . All three were made Honorary Old Wilsonians at our AGM on 12th December. What is an Honorary Old Wilsonian ? Its someone who didnt attend or teach at Wilsons School but has made a great contribution over a number of years and made a notable difference to the club & the club showing its appreciation for all their efforts . So well done Jan, Norman & Archie & thankyou.Jan Jenkins
Jan joined OWLTC along with several other players when the neighbouring club The Lanes closed down in the late 1990s. Jan Quickly became invovled in supporting her new club , developing her own brand of Quiz Night to raise funds. Jan assisted by her husband Alan, ran a Quiz Night twice each year for more than a decade, and more recently once a year.Their Quiz Nights have been well attended throughout the 19 years this event has taken place & everyone looks forward to Jan & Alan unique brand of fun competition. Jan has raised more than £15,000 for tennis club funds, and at the same time generated bar prifits for the wider club of £10,000. A magnificent contribution to the social side of the club as well as to its finances.
Since joining in 2006 Norman has brought a steady stream of new blood into the club - many of today's familiar faces were first introduced by Norman . He has regularly encouraged loads of non-member friends to support the various social functions that the OWLTC put on. He's been a staunch supporter of the tennis club, a long term Committee member. He's been Men's 2 team captain(in his own inimtable style). He has always been a willing pair of hands- whether cooking at OWLS (Old Wilsonians Luncheon Society), helping set out tables for the Quiz Nght or shinning up the scaffolding and changing floodlight bulbs.
He's an all round good egg , a loyal supporter of bopth the OWA & OWLTC.
Archie is the face of the Old Wilsonians . As you enter the bar his smiling face greets you , hes always polite , up for a laugh & treats the Old Boys as his home . I've known Archie since he was a young lad playing on sundays & hanging around the bar as his mum Nancy served . So it came as no surprise when he popped up behind it . For years he supplied my Old man with double scotch & ginger plus makes certain i leave the club with a bag of crisps for my other half (I can't tell you the trouble those crisps have got me out of ! ). Archie over the years has taken on more responsibility at the club and is the go to man when we are struggling . Pretty certain if you cut Archie in half (and i have contemplated this) he would bleed Old Wilsonians.
Congrats & thankyou all for making our lives brighter
