OLD WILSONIANS’ TENNIS COLTS

Becoming a Tennis Colt is a very enjoyable way to encourage your child to look after their health by developing a life-long habit of exercising whilst having fun and learning a skill that will add to their social life throughout their life.

At Old Wilsonians we have coaching sessions for youngsters aged 4 upwards. These sessions take place after the end of the school day from around 3-45 pm and on Saturday mornings at present. Our wet weather programme means these sessions take place whatever the weather. And we also have all-day and morning camps for youngsters during the school holidays, where a range of sports and activities can be enjoyed.

We are currently offering a terrific deal to parents. Our Colts membership costs a family only £25 for a full year. This category of membership allows:

(a) ALL children in the family 11 and under to become Tennis Colts – this category of junior membership lasts until a child‘s 12th birthday

(b) the parents (whether one or two) to become social members of the OWA, permitted to use the bar and clubhouse. We also encourage Colts parents to play tennis with their children as much as possible.

As an incentive, this type of membership entitles the parents to a discount of £1 from each coaching session, and from the multi-sport and tennis holiday camps in half-term etc. As a junior member of the tennis club, each Tennis Colt will enjoy priority use of the hard courts most of the time and will, in addition, be able to take part in any of the tournaments that the club organises which we open to juniors. You can see, therefore, that this membership will more than pay for itself if your child has the weekly coaching sessions, and is even better value if they join in with things like the half-term camps that our Head Coach Jake puts on.

The Colts membership form is attached together with a couple of documents that are mentioned on that form for you to see. You can complete it electronically and return it to me, or can print it and hand it to Jake – our Head Coach - if you prefer. Payment by cheque or online is possible

We have a new Junior Team Manager who has started a Junior Club session on Monday evenings and she is always keen to hear (and provide) what Colts and junior members want from her.

If adults wish to become full tennis-playing members of the club the options are all explained on our website http://tennis.oldwilsonians.com/membership/ . If you join part way through the year the annual membership fees are charged on a pro rata basis.

We are the champions

Congratulations to the 3XI sqaud who clinched the SAL Junior Division 2 title last night with a 3-1 against Carshalton. This culminates an excellent season from Aaron Newble and his squad which also included 2 close semi final defeats. Like the rest of the club, the 3s have benefited from improved commitment and availability. Long may it continue.

Having won promotion Arrons 3's kept up the title ambitions at a rain lashed HD thanks to a second half Matt Williams winner whilst the 9's showed how much progress theve made with a 4 4 draw against the Old Lady. Nice to see club stalwarts Martin DeSouza and Nev Spencer notching along with next generation Scott Engerland and Will Snu. Elsewhere, the 1's stayed top as Notts and WW lost so finish at least 2nd, Salesians require 2 pts from 3 games to take the League whilst the 5's slipped to 3rd as Kew won their last game. So to the dinner......which was a quiet cultural affair with gentle banter washed down with a occasional small port and Michelin fine Blue Bengal dining. Players of the Year were 1 - 9 respectively Tom Weber-Mac, Tom Hilton, Perry Wild, Andy Free, Ed Hindley, Gaffa, Chibu, Jack 'where's my jacket' Sparrow and incredibly Matt Hallett. Young Player went to a remarkably sober Jack Aguera - well done to all.

Oz won Golden boot whilst Will Hodgess picked up JArthur for his understated goal celebrations. Finally Clubman of the Year to Andy (GK) Parkinson, Clarkey Q award Stu Paton. Thanks to Jasper for helping set up, Hope and the girls for waitressing so patiently and of course Barnes on the Mic for keeping good order.

The circle of OWFC life continues, next year our 124th sees the 1's - 3's in the Top Divisions of the SAL for the first time in our history, the 4's winning a cup(?), the 5's playing the Billings way, whilst I expect the strength shown at the top of the club this year to filter down to the 6's to 9's who all can achieve promotions. Lets finish the final games in style, reflect on a successful season and look forward to next year, its been emotional.

Togger Final Results

Togger came to an end on Sat, with a three way fight for the title between Rich Smart, Gavin Englefield and Aaron Newble. The First Team had already wrapped up the post Christmas prize and the £88 that brings.

Barnes Clanachan was leading Month 6, but had a disastarous collapse, scoring -2 points to drop off the pace. Scoring was very low in general this week with surprise heavy defeats for Newcastle and Crawley causing lots of minus points across the board and only 4 of the possible 10 games receiving correct score guesses. Barnes dropped all the way to 6th place for the month.

Nick Lehmann and Mike Evans both predicted Sunderland's 2-2 draw with Bolton, with Mike finshing one point off victory for the week with only 11 points!

Sheffield United's draw with Stevenage was predicted by myself, Rich Shaw, Pete Taylor and the 1s. Rich and myself also finished on 11 points, tied for 2nd with Mike.

Torquay lost a last minute goal against Crewe meaning maximum points for Bruce Graham, Stu Paton, Geoff Robinson and Matt Williams. Geoff was another to tie for second place this week.

Bruce didn't win despite also guessing the Palace score correctly, which was the best predicted score of the week. Matt Watts, a Palace fan guessed the defeat and also finished in joint second position.

However, the performance of the week and the guess of the season goes to a man that this week predicted that the 9s would draw 4-4 this week, a man who was under pressure defending a slender 1 point lead at the top and attempting to win his second sucessive togger championship. A feat all the more impressive as I don't believe he has kicked a ball in anger this season. That man is Gavin Engelfield. Gavin has cleaned up this week, taking the weekly prize of £24 for his 12 points. He also has, as a result shared the monthly prize of £56 with Mike Evans, beating Rich Shaw into 3rd place. In addition, Gavin picks up second place in the post Christmas togger for a further £40, as well of course the big one, the togger champion and the £100 first prize.

Gavin had a one point lead over Aaron Newble and a further 1 point over Rich Smart. However, like many Aaron and Rich had a nightmare week slumping to 2 and 0 points respectively! In fact the ended up 3rd and 4th as my 11 points somehow managed to sneak me into second place! I win £45 and Aaron £25.

I just wanted to thank everyone for supporting togger this season. It is really important for the club that people continue to support these events. We paid out nearly £1,500 in prizes and 40% of the field received a prize during the season. It will defininitely run again next season and I hope you all get involved again, I would welcome any suggestions to tweaking the game for those of you that play and please encourage others to get involved next time round.

Thank you for highlighting my demise.

Could I just say a big thank you for all the effort you have made in not just running Togger, but for your support in all other aspects of Club Events this year even though you cost me a shed load at the golf day.

You have run Togger with almost seamless professionalism and I am most impressed that you had booked yourself a meeting for 10am every week in order to complete the Stats.

I hope all you players have enjoyed it this season and many congratulations to the prize winners – look forward to seeing you all back on the Togger front next year.
