Old Wilsonians 1st XI: 274 St Lawrence & Highland Court 1st XI: 278 for 7 - St Lawrence win by 3 wickets
On a bleak, chilly May afternoon Old Wilsonians and St Lawrence & Highland Court scored 552 runs between them, a scenario more in tune with a cloudless mid-summer day than the first league game of the season. The OW innings revolved around Matt Abbett who hit a magnificent 168 not out – including 18 fours and 6 sixes – in a merciless display of fine batting, which none of the visiting bowlers were able to control. In reply St Lawrence lost an early wicket but a stand of 125 between Matthew Hammond (70) and Graeme Tryon (67) put them in control before a clutter of wickets saw them slump to 209 for 7 with less than ten overs remaining. The fact that they got the runs required with three balls to spare was down to a captain’s innings of 82 not out from William Hilton - eight fours and two sixes – and a supporting 11 not out from Dylan Emmett. The return fixture on July 8th should be worth travelling a long way to watch!
Old Wilsonians 2nd Xl 293 for 3, Old Colfeians 2nd Xl 264 - OW's win by 29 runs!
An unbeaten fourth wicket stand between Chris Scott (104 n.o) and Kenny Maxwell (102 n,o) enabled Old Wilsonians’ 2nd Xl to post an impressive total against their Colfeian counter-parts , with Siva Ranjan (48) also making a valuable contribution to the cause. However, their bowlers were made to work hard for their victory as the home side’s batsmen, too, were in fine form, with Mandeep Singh (68), Vinnie de Souza (52), Chris Tarrant (32) and Harshi Patel (26) showing a determined resistance after the OW’s had captured four early wickets as Colfeians finished only 30 runs short of a winning total, But David Pilgrim, 3 for 40, Guy Hannah 2 for 48 and Doug Forbes, 2 for 53 eventually found a way through to earn the OW’s a hard fought victory.
Bromley 4th XI 259 for 5, Old Wilsonians' 3rd XI 123 - Bromley win by 136 Runs
A commanding innings of 128 not out by Nathan Rakshamuthu enabled Bromley 4th Xl to post an impressive 259 for 5 against Old Wilsonians with Neserasa Kovarthanan (30), James Gillin (32) and Ariful Kayshar (32) also giving the visiting bowlers no respite. In reply only Chetan Kamat (40) posed any threat to the Bromley bowlers, Rahul Pandey finishing with 4 for 19.
Old Wilsonians’ 4th Xl 92 NatWest 1st Xl 94 for 7 - NatWest 1st XI win by 3 wickets!
A bit of early season rustiness, particularly in the batting, was evident in this game with 17 wickets falling for just 186 runs. A fifth wicket stand of 55 between Neil Treacher (20) and Howard Abbett (29) was the highlight of the OW’s innings, with Nat West’s Jack Stone, 4 for 10, and Nick Dunwell, 3 for 11, taking full advantage of the aforementioned rustiness. In reply Natwest seemed to be cruising to victory as they progressed to 71 for 3, opener Gary Jones (30) leading the way, but when he was bowled by Rod Warboys wickets began to fall rapidly with the latter finishing with 5 for 25 on an afternoon ideally suited to his rusty knees! However, Natwest did not panic and secured a three wicket victory.
Old Wilsonians’ Sunday Friendly Xl 171 Ide Hill 117 - OWs win by 54 runs!
The Sunday Xl got off to winning start against nine man Ide Hill , with Velson Devarajulu (52) and Louis Pryor (28) putting on 72 for the first wicket, However, the Ide Hill bowlers then started to find their range and but for a bludgeoning 22 not out from skipper Tony Sherlock, they would not have reached 171, In reply Ide Hill also started well with P, Gammage (47) J. Goldup (20) and T, Clarkson (18) seeing them coast to 104 for 2 before they, too, began to stutter to such an extent that they were bowled out for 117 in the 30th over, with Howard Abbett, 3 for 10, doing most of the damage.
